There are places the moment you enter them you immediately know that there is something special about it. This is a must go in the summer: the courtyard of the Hamburger town hall.

Originally build in 1896 in memorandum of the 8000 victims of the cholera epidemic and to mark it’s special meaning of how important it is to have access to fresh water.

I returned several times to this place and was really taken by the warm glow of the red parasol which reflected with a warm glow on the wall.

In my next post I explain how I obtained that warmth.

I was invited by the management of the  Impire Riverside Hotel to paint from one of their rooms on the 18th floor. The hotel is directly located above the harbour. What a view, what a treat for a girl from Hamburg. And what clouds we had. The day before the storm Xavier hit north Germany and left Hamburg and it’s surroundings a little bit of chaos. But it brought also glorious clouds and rays of sunshine.

View from the Riverside. Sun, clouds, rain .. I couldn’t keep up with the fast changing weather. So I did this one color study and stayed to sketches and photographs which are waiting to be transfferred to bigger paintings.

The warm sunny days will be leaving soon and I can finally post one of my paintings from April. These kind of clouds are my favourite ones.

Well, or maybe the summer clouds when they’re moving so slow and you can almost see the pin sticking to them and holding  it tight. Easy to paint this way.

Or, maybe the storm chaser clouds from autumn. If you don’t pay attention it will be gooonnnnneeeeeeeeeee.

Plein Air: Alster Park

0

Originally I wanted to post a painting from April, but that didn’t feel right, especially with the warm temperatures like yesterday. So here it goes a plein air study from the Alster park. Foliage is still missing. But if I wait a week or two I don’t need to add it any more.

Warm up, 2017, Astrid Volquardsen

Recently I started using black/white studies for my warm ups in the studio. After 20 Minutes I have reached my right side of the brain.

I use Ultramarine Blue/ Burnt Umber/ Titan white to mix my greys.

Alsterlicht, Plein Air Studie, Öl auf Hartfaser, 2017, Astrid Volquardsen

On the warm days towards the end of summer one can have a fantastic view across the Alster lake. Because everybody knows the warm days won’t last forever everybody seeks the opportunity to spend time on the water.

Later I was asked by a young couple if I would see the world any differently than any regular person? Ui, good question. I indeed believe that a schooled artist eye sees differently. But that’s the same with any musician who reacts to different kind of music ora  sailor who recognizes the the slightest change of wind.

I am deeply convinced that if society raises their heads from their smart phones they would be surprised by how much beauty they are surrounded.
